Where is it? Africa, between Libya, Sudan, and Nigeria. See map.
What does it look like? Desert in the North, green in the South. There are mountains in the far North, East, centre and far South, but most of the country is pretty flat. See pictures.
How is the weather? Hot much of the year. Temps over 40 degrees are common.
Who lives there? About 7 million people belonging to over 120 different ethnic groups. Not many live in the deserts. The area with the most people is the South
What language do they speak? French is the language of official documents but Chad Arabic is the most widely spoken language. There are over 100 tribal languages.
What do they grow? Millet is most common. There are places where maize, wheat and rice are grown. Then there are peanuts, beans, cucumbers and all that stuff. As for fruit there are juicy mangoes, as well as guavas, limes, and dates.
What about religion? Most of the people in the Northern two thirds are Muslims and most of the people in the Southern third are Christian or animist.
What do they make in Chad? Not a lot really, at least not much that gets sold abroad. Most people’s homes have things that were made by hand in the country. Most manufactured products come from outside.
Is there oil in Chad? Yes, some by the Lake Chad, more in the South, and more exploration is going on in the South East.
Is there enough water? There are rivers and lakes in the South and West. The desert is very dry and so no one lives there but there are huge amounts of water underground. The people on the edge of the desert are the ones who are post likely to run out of water.
What animals live there? There are elephants, hippos, hyenas and that sort of stuff but they keep away from where people actually live most of the time. The animals people see are camels, donkeys, cows and goats on the one hand and ants, spiders lizards and flies on the other.
